Our Mission

(Re)designing learning to close opportunity gaps in a changing world™

Who We Are

Over the past eight years, the IEE has established itself as a credible and important voice in K-12 education, particularly in advancing innovation and equity in our schools. In collaboration with some of the nation's largest urban school districts, the IEE’s team of experts has taken a comprehensive approach to identify best practices, build capacity and improve student outcomes through research and evaluation, strategic direction and professional learning.

Our History

In 2007, the Center for Education Policy and Law (CEPAL) was founded at the School of Leadership and Education Sciences at the University of San Diego with a gift from the William D. Lynch Foundation to understand the complex system of K-16 education and to advance strategic pathways that lead to better student outcomes. In 2011 with funding from Dr. Irwin and Joan Jacobs, the Mobile Technology Learning Center (MTLC) was established to collaborate with school districts to effectively integrate technology into today’s digital learning environments. In 2014, the Institute for Entrepreneurship in Education (IEE) was formed as non-profit, university-based research center at the School of Leadership and Education Sciences at the University of San Diego to become the umbrella organization for CEPAL and the MTLC.

In 2017, under the leadership of a new executive director, the IEE merged CEPAL and the MTLC into one comprehensive IEE team. Continuing to combine research with practice, in partnership with school districts, the IEE aims to (re)design learning to close opportunity gaps in a changing world through our Innovative Teaching & Learning and World of Work initiatives.
