Leadership Academy

HR’s Leadership Academy is intended to be a collection of programs that focus on enhancing supervisory, managerial and leadership skills at various levels throughout our organization.  We currently have two programs in place that are offered at various times throughout the year.

Foundations of Leadership Program

The Foundations of Leadership program is designed for new supervisors, “high potential” employees who may be considered for leadership positions in the future, or supervisors who would like a refresher course on foundational supervisory skills.  It is intended to strengthen employees’ ability to demonstrate leadership within their current role, how to present themselves and prepare for interviews and promotional opportunities, and developing a strong foundation in key supervisory skills.  Competencies addressed in this program include:  Communication, Understanding Motivation and Behavior, Understanding our Strategic Directions, Shifting Perspectives, Creative Problem Solving, Performance Management, and Managing Multiple Priorities/Time Management.  Participants will be guided through a variety of experiences, including workshops and experiential learning activities.

Program Format:  This comprehensive program meets approximately once a month throughout the year in formal sessions to introduce relevant concepts and strategies for aspiring, or new supervisors. Additional training time may be scheduled during regular working hours for coaching sessions, additional activities and team project.

Supervisor Essentials Program

The Supervisor Essentials program specifically focuses on developing and strengthening core supervisory competencies.  It is intended to strengthen supervisors’ knowledge of key responsibilities and become familiar with our organization’s specific processes and procedures.  Competencies addressed in this program include:  Emotional Intelligence and Communication, Inclusion and the Value of Diversity, Interviewing and Employment Strategies, Navigating Organizational Culture, Performance Management, Team Motivation and USD Policies & Procedures. Participants will be guided through a variety of experiences, including workshops and experiential learning activities.

Program Format:  This comprehensive program required significant time, effort, and dedication including participation in monthly workshops on varying topics as listed in the above competency areas.  These sessions included small group work, simulations, as well as other activities and some direct instruction.  Participants are asked to prepare a presentation explaining how they have applied at least one concept from the program in their role as a supervisor and what results came from this.  Participants are given flexibility in the size and scope of these projects.  They create an explanation of their project, which is included in a portfolio, as well as prepared a brief presentation about their project to their peers and other members of the campus community.
