History Major |

What can you do with an undergraduate degree in history? History majors become good writers and effective speakers. They know how to use evidence and argument to support their point of view. They also understand the importance of placing current events into historical perspective. History majors go on to work in law and business, public service (including politics, public administration, and the foreign service), college and secondary teaching, the military, newspapers, museums and libraries. They work as editors, archivists, administrators, curators, historic preservation specialists, writers, public policy analysts and historians. Some work in the production of historical documentaries in television, radio and film. For more information, see Dr. Peter N. Stearn's excellent article, "Why Study History?" on the American Historical Association's website: http://www.historians.org/pubs/Free/WhyStudyHistory.htm The History Major History majors are required to complete 12 units of lower-division course work and 24 units of upper-division course work, including History 300W - Historian's Methods - a class that fulfills the general education requirement for written literacy. In the major, students must also take at least two upper-division courses in each of the following three categories: 1) the United States; 2) Europe; and 3) World. Students can receive up to 3 units credit for doing an internship at one of the historical societies or museums in San Diego. See History 498 "Internship" in the Bulletin.
