1. What can one do with a Master of Arts (MA) in History from the University of San Diego? The MA in History program at the University of San Diego prepares students for a career in public and academic history. Public historians often works in museums, historical societies, architecture firms that need historians to prepare environmental impact reports, and state or national parks. Public historians are skilled in curating material, preparing exhibitions, indexing and cataloging information, and writing grant applications. An academic historian with an MA degree can work as a teacher in a community college, high school, grade school, or he/she can pursue an advanced degree or a career in government agencies ranging from the Department of State to the CIA. Career choices for public and academic history often overlap. 2. What does the program of study involve? The student must take 30 units of course work. At USD, one class equals three units. With some exceptions, students usually take nine classes and an internship that is equal to one class. 3. What does the MA program specialize in? The History program at the University of San Diego specializes in the history of California, San Diego, the Southwest, northern Mexico, especially the Baja California region, Chicano History, Native American history, and the art and architecture of southern California. The program's specialties, though, should not discourage the student who has other interests that may fit within the expertise of the history faculty. 4. What qualifications should an applicant have? To be considered a worthy candidate, the successful applicant should have at least a 3.0 GPA in a certified BA program, score at least in the 50th percentile in each of the three sections of the Graduate Record Exam, and have an undergraduate degree in History or related program in the humanities or social sciences. Please be aware that the History department judges each student on his or her own merits. Even if a student does not meet the qualifications for a History MA degree, that student will receive consideration if he or she has promise and the potential to do well in a graduate program. 5. When and how does one apply? The history program at the University of San Diego employs a rolling admissions policy and will accept applications up through August. If one waits until August, however, one must be aware of certain deadlines. (See next question on financial aid.) As for the application, the student must submit:

What about financial aid? The student can finance his or her education by securing loans, receiving a Dean's Merit Fellowship, or earning a grant-in-aid. Dean's Merit Fellowships go to students of promise. A grant-in-aid often involves federal money that is distributed by the university. Any student who wishes to considered for a grant-in-aid must file a FAFSA form.
