Services Offered
Outpatient Medical Care
Quality, accessible and convenient outpatient medical care is provided for acute illnesses, minor injuries, preventive care and medical problems. A physician, nurse practitioner and registered nurse are on duty during operating hours.
In order to minimize patient waiting time, students are strongly encouraged to schedule appointments in advance. Patients without appointments will be triaged by the registered nurse, who will determine whether the patient should be seen that day or scheduled for the next day. Please note that patients who arrive more than 10 minutes late for appointments may need to reschedule their appointment for another day. The Student Health Center is not equipped to provide emergency medical services. For fastest emergency response, use a "land line" rather than a cell phone to call for help.

Off-Campus Medical Care & Physician Referrals
The Student Health Center has compiled a list of local hospitals & urgent care clinics, as well as low-cost county & community clinics, for services that are not provided on campus. The Student Health Center can also assist students in scheduling referral appointments to specialist physicians in the community. The University is not responsible for the provision or cost of medical care rendered off campus.
Health Education
We are excited to announce the addition of a full-time health educator to the SHC staff! The health educator can assist you in individual and group programs to improve eating and exercise behaviors, quit smoking, handle stress, improve sleep habits, decrease infection risks, and other health behavior/health education topics. The health educator will also be working with a variety of groups campus-wide to implement health promotion programs that are identified by students at USD.
As part of its efforts to provide a healthy and safe environment, the University requires all new students to be immunized against measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), tetanus (DPT) and hepatitis B. A tuberculin test (Mantoux/PPD) is required within one year for all new students and anyone living on campus. Proof of immunity to chickenpox (or history of having had the disease) is also required. Please click here for more information about immunizations that are required and available at the Student Health Center.
In addition, the Student Health Center strongly recommends vaccination against several other serious diseases. All students living in San Diego or considering travel abroad should seriously consider the benefits of these voluntary vaccinations. Please click here for information about additional vaccinations that are recommended and available at the Student Health Center.
Students are STRONGLY encouraged to have medical insurance coverage and to know if their insurance has a pharmacy benefit. Health insurance is critically important to help cover costs of medical care not provided by the Student Health Center. Students should carry their health insurance identification card with them at all times. Please click here for more information about purchasing health insurance.
