The University of San Diego (USD) sponsors a summer program in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico designed to provide students with an intense academic and cultural experience. The Guadalajara Summer Program is suitable both for students with a primary interest in learning Spanish and for those interested in taking related courses in other fields. While it is recommended that students have some knowledge of the Spanish language or enroll in a Spanish class while in Guadalajara, no previous Spanish study is required.
The program welcomes individuals over 18 years of age, enrolled and in good standing at USD or another college/university. Non-traditional students may also apply. Students may take either three 3-unit classes (one 3-unit course that runs the entire length of the program and two Spanish language courses that are 3 weeks long) or students can take two 3-unit classes and one 1-unit class. USD classes run Monday - Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:35 p.m., and are held on the ITESO University campus (Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente). The ITESO is a Jesuit University and it is one of the most distinguished and prestigious Universities in all of Latin America.
The faculty is comprised of USD professors, visiting professors from other U.S. universities, and instructors from Guadalajara. The program offers Spanish I-IV, as well as courses in art, art history, business, communication studies, dance, education, English, ethnic studies, history, Latin, Latin American literature, Latino studies, music, political science, psychology, Spanish literature, sociology, and theology & religious studies. All courses carry USD academic and residence credit.
The University of San Diego is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Credits earned in the summer program are applicable to USD degrees and will usually transfer to other universities and colleges. Non-USD students should check with their institution on the applicability of courses to their academic or professional programs.
