Hall Screening of Black Gold, a documentary about the fair trade coffee industry. Free travel mugs to the first 50 attendees and coffee samples for everyone.

Food For Thought

Fair Trade Demonstration, Discussion and Food Tasting

7 p.m., Salomon Hall
What is fair trade? What are its benefits and challenges? Come to this interactive demonstration and enjoy free fair trade food products. Presented by the Center for Awareness, Service, and Action with support from Catholic Relief Services.

Jane Goodall Lecture “Reason for Hope”

7 p.m., Jenny Craig Pavilion
The world-renowned primatologist and U.N. Messenger of Peace will speak on how we can save threatened species and the planet. Two free tickets with USD ID; pick up at UC or JCP ticket window. Additional tickets are $10 at the JCP ticket office.

Green Day in Valley

(No, not the band)

All resident students are being asked to make small changes in their daily lives to help the planet and support USD’s sustainability efforts. The weekly “Fridays in the Valley” event from 4-7 p.m. will focus on the environment.


Sunday, 4/20

Earth Fair 2008

10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Balboa Park
The university is a sponsor of the event, and will have a booth featuring Marine Science’s hands-on touch tank. Trams will run between USD and Earth Fair on the hour from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Meet in front of the University Center.

Short Films with Green Themes

Environmental film festival at Aroma’s

7 p.m., On the “green” next to Aroma’s
Watch enlightening short docs in the open air. Bring your friends and a beach towel, and grab a cup of joe for this event, organized by Associated Students. Free travel mugs to the first 50 attendees and coffee samples for everyone.

Tuesday, 4/22 Earth Day

Farmer’s Market and Fair Trade Booths

11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the University Center
Bring a shopping bag and stock up on produce from local growers; vendors supporting fair trade practices will also be on hand. Also, resident students should stop by the Residential Life booth to find out if their hall won the Recyclemania contest. Winners will receive a special gift.

Dumpster “Dump and Sort”

In front of Maher Hall
Don’t be surprised when you see a pile of garbage on the lawn in front of Maher Hall on Earth Day. Students will separate garbage to demonstrate how much more of our trash can be recycled instead of ending up in the landfill.
