Tim O’Brien grew up in Minnesota where he attended Macalester College in Minneapolis. After graduation, he was drafted for military service in Vietnam, where he served as an infantry foot soldier. While in Vietnam, he rose to the rank of sergeant and received the Purple Heart. His collection of stories The Things They Carried was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, won the Heartland Award from the Chicago Tribune, won the French prize for the best foreign book of the year, and was chosen by the New York Times Book Review as one of the nine best books of the year in all categories.

The collection of stories in The Things They Carried fall together like foot soldiers; their mission, to tell the truth about Vietnam, “the hard and exact truth as it seemed.” The truth is slippery, however; because “you can’t even tell a true war story. Sometimes it’s beyond telling.” He does try to tell with stories too fantastical to believe, and in detail too hard to imagine, filtering the horror of war through the beauty of his prose.
