Pamela Gray Payton is the assistant vice president for the Office of Public Affairs. Appointed in 2003, Gray Payton works closely with the president, vice president of University Relations and other senior administrators to develop and implement strategic public relations strategies that advance the mission of the University of San Diego by educating and informing internal and external constituencies about key institutional initiatives and priorities. Gray Payton supervises a professional staff responsible for all institutional media relations, web communications, social media, and community relations and government affairs. As the chief university spokesperson, she is responsible for issues management, crisis planning and communications. Gray Payton coordinates and manages the university's presence at community-wide events intended to strengthen the university's reputation as a valued community partner.

Before assuming the assistant vice president role in 2003, Gray Payton served as the university's Community and Government Relations director.

An active member of the campus community, Gray Payton serves as a founding member of the Changemaker Hub Core Group, co-founder and co-director of the Black Student Retention and Recognition Committee; and as a member of the Rankings Committee; and the Commencement Committee. In the community, Gray Payton serves on the boards of Girls Scouts San Diego County; and is a member of the California Elected Women's Association for Education and Research; the Public Relations Society of America, San Diego; Jack and Jill of America, San Diego; and the La Jolla Country Day School Marketing and Communications Committee.
