Alumni Scholarships

The vision of the USD Alumni Association is to engage alumni on behalf of students. One of the critical ways alumni can support students is through the Alumni Association's scholarship programs. The Alumni Association's scholarship endowment recently exceeded $350,000 and we awarded five scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year to deserving undergraduate and graduate students.

The Alumni Board of Directors recently set a $1 million goal for our scholarship endowments by 2012. Over 90 percent of the gifts to our scholarships are made up of annual gifts ranging from $50 - $250.

Every gift matters. We encourage you to learn more about our scholarship programs and hope you can help us reach our $1 million goal.

Therese Whitcomb '53 Scholarship

Alumni created this scholarship in honor of the first graduate from the College for Women, Therese Truitt Whitcomb '53, so that future students will have the opportunity to attend USD. The scholarship is awarded to a sophomore, junior or senior with a 3.0 or greater GPA with demonstrated exceptional service to USD or the community. Legacy and transfer students are also considering factors.

Daniel L. Burkett Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship was established to honor the late alumnus Danny Burkett ’06 and his impact on community and student life while attending USD. Burkett graduated summa cum laude and was a member of the prestigious Alcala Club, Omicron Delta Epsilon International Economics Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and Delta Tau Delta International Fraternity. This scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated exceptional involvement in USD Greek life and service to the community. For more information about the scholarship, click here.

Kyle O'Connell Memorial Scholarship

This memorial fund was named in honor of Kyle O'Connell, the son of Michael '87 and Julie '88 (Belfiore) O'Connell.  Kyle's brave fight against brain cancer inspired USD alumni to create the scholarship. Criteria include graduate and/or undergraduate junior or senior students enrolled in the study of healing arts, including nursing, marriage and family therapy, and the sciences.

Alumni Endowed Scholarship

This fund was established and endowed by multiple gifts, including a lead gift of $25,000 from Shannon Smith '86. Created, funded and directed by fellow USD alumni, the USD Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund was launched in 2006 to provide much-needed scholarships for USD students. Recipients of this scholarship are current USD students with financial need, strong academic merit and who give back to the USD and local community. Over 90 percent of the gifts to this fund are annual gifts between $50 and $250. With the collective power of thousands of USD alumni, we have the ability to ensure future Toreros a USD experience.
