Please join us for the opening celebration of our new exhibition, "The May Collection: Twenty Works for Twenty Years" in the David W. May American Indian Gallery.

In 1995, The University of San Diego accepted a large gift of American Indian artifacts from the family of David May, an alum who passed away at a young age and whose parents wished to honor him by donating their vast personal collection to his alma mater. Since that time, these objects have served as a valued teaching resource for the University and have formed the basis for annual exhibitions that introduce our students to Native American material culture and attract community interest to the campus.

In celebration of this anniversary year, the University Galleries has assembled an exhibition of twenty artifacts and works of art from the May Collection’s permanent collection, including a newly commissioned work by the renowned Kumeyaay basketmaker, Eva Salazar.

Additionally, an illustrated, scholarly publication documenting the May Collection, edited by USD Anthropology Professor, Alana Cordy-Collins, will accompany this show. This is the first major publication to be produced in association with the May Collection gift and is a fitting tribute to its growing reputation on campus and beyond.

We will also hold a special tribute to Professor Cordy-Collins (1944-2015) at 6 p.m. All are invited to attend.

Admission is free | Reservations are not required
