Faculty of the French Section
Full-Timemichèle c. magninDr. Magnin studied at the Sorbonne and then the University of Geneva, where she received a Translator’s Degree in 1971. Dr. Magnin worked as a translator in the U.S. before earning her Ph.D. in French Literature from the University of California, San Diego. She taught French and Italian at San Diego State University and the University of California, San Diego, and now teaches French language at the intermediate level and advanced courses in French conversation, composition, civilization, and literature at USD. Dr. Magnin's research involves teaching language with technology. She has lectured on the subject from Alaska to Hawaii, and abroad (China, Japan, Belgium, Canada and France). She has published articles in The French Review, Le Français dans le Monde, Dialogues et Cultures (FIPF), The Dong-Eui International Journal (Korea). Her other areas of interest are French culture and civilization, women writers, and translation. Dr. Magnin is the Coordinator of the French Section and serves as the faculty advisor of Epsilon Theta, USD's chapter of Pi Delta Phi (the National French Honor Society) and the French Club. She is also active in the local chapter of the Alliance Française. Beatriz Lado Dr. Lado received her Licenciatura in English Philology from the University of Valencia; an M.A. in English from Northwestern State University; an M.A. in Linguistics from Louisiana State University; and an M.S. in Spanish Linguistics from Georgetown University, where she also received her Ph.D. in Spanish Applied Linguistics. Richard StroikDr. Stroik received his Ph.D. in Twentieth Century French Poetry from New York University after defending his dissertation: "The Voyage as a Performance of Being in the Poetry of Saint-John Perse." He teaches elementary and intermediate language, including a special intenstive third semester summer course in Aix-en-Provence, France. His upper-division classes include literature courses in the genres of poetry, novel, and prose; literary analysis, and French phonetics. Dr. Stroik has served the department as Director of the Intensive Language Model Program and Coordinator of the French Section. He has chaired the Faculty Committee for Study Abroad and continues as a member of the committee. He has also served as the Director of USD's European and Japanese affiliated programs. Jacques M. WendelDr. Wendel holds a Diplôme de licence ès lettres in English from the University of Nancy and an M.A. in French Literature from University of Notre Dame. He earned a Ph.D. in French with a specialization in XVII-XVIII Century French Literature from Ohio State University. He joined the faculty here in 1978. He teaches elementary and intermediate language, advanced composition, and upper division literature courses covering the Middle Ages to the Eighteenth Century, the French Revolution to the Second Half of the Twentieth Century, French Theater and special topics courses such as Diderot et l'Encyclopedie. Dr. Wendel served as Department Chair from 1986 to 1998, and simultaneously as Coordinator of the French Section from 1992 to 1998. During his tenure as chair, he oversaw the affiliation of the USD with the Institute for American Universities which offered students of French the opportunity to study in France. As Coordinator of USD's European and Japanese study abroad programs, he counseled thousands of USD students in preparation for their programs in Spain, Italy, Austria, Germany, France and Japan. Dr. Wendel is on phased retirement and only teaches spring semesters. His advisees should consult with either Dr. Magnin or Dr. Stroik during fall semesters. AdjunctKate Defrise Prof. Defrise received an M.A. in French Translation from l'Ecole d'Interprètes Internationaux at l'Université de l'Etat à Mons in Belgium. She has rejoined the faculty to teach French 201 during the fall '08 semester. Sophie HalvinProfessor Halvin earned her Agregation from the French government and has a Master's Degree in Linguistics from the Sorbonne University in Paris. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Education as well as teaching credentials both in French and English. She teaches the full spectrum of elementary and intermediate language classes. Shirley SaadProf. Saad received a B.A. in French and English from UCSD and an M.A. in Comparative Literature from SDSU. She teaches elementary and intermediate language at USD.
