Dr. Shi was hired to revive our Chinese program and teaches elementary and intermediate Mandarin language courses.

She received her Ph.D. in Communications from the University of California, San Diego in 1992. She also holds an M.A. in Journalism from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, and a B.A. in English from Lanzhou University in China.

She worked for years as a journalist for the People's Daily in Beijing before leaving for her Ph.D. study in the U.S. in the late 1980's. She also worked as a radio producer for the BBC in London for two years after getting her Ph.D. As a journalist, she has written and made numerous news articles and radio programs, in both Chinese and English.

Dr. Shi is the author of Conversational Chinese 400 (2004, Scholarly) and Chinese Workbook (2001, McGraw-Hill). Her third book, Chinese Grammar for Fun, is in the working process.
