Drop Shadow

Recycling

Recycling had its beginnings through the efforts of the Associated Student’s Conservation Club. The club established the recycling of glass, aluminum cans and cardboard on campus through the use of designated igloos and containers in a few locations on campus.  In December of 1989, the Conservation Club came to Facilities Management for help in expanding the program.  The General Services Department assumed the responsibility of developing and implementing the expansion program.

The expansion started with the paper recycling program. We provided all offices and libraries with blue recycling wastebaskets and changed from white paper to a mixed paper program.  Next, classrooms were targeted with mixed paper recycling containers placed in each classroom. We added the responsibility of collecting this paper and depositing at a central location to the duties of each custodian. We added 3, 4, 6 & 8 cubic yards commingled recycling dumpsters at various trash enclosures throughout the campus, including residence halls.

We expanded the number of locations to recycle commingled beverage containers and added plastic recycling to the program. These satellite bins are located in vending areas, in front of buildings and in patios, to collect commingled beverage and food containers (aluminum & metal cans; glass bottles; and plastic containers 1 PETE & 2 HDPE).  The responsibility for servicing these bins throughout campus and transporting the recyclables to a central location is the workload of one casual worker hired for this purpose.  This was and continues to be accomplished without additional budget resources.

In the last two years, we have provided all residential units with blue recycling wastebaskets for use by the students. In cooperation with Residential Life, the recycling bins are left in the residential units to be used by guests and conferences during our Residential Summer Conference program, which are serviced by our housekeepers as they provide routine maid service.

Currently, all recycling bins accept commingled recyclables, which includes commingled beverage containers and mixed paper. Waste Management Inc. separates the commodities at their transfer station in El Cajon. Recycling is picked up by Waste Management Inc. on Tuesdays and Fridays only.

We have implemented inkjet/toner cartridge recycling in the residence halls and throughout campus. The collection of ink jet cartridges can be sent by intercampus mail to the General Services office. Toner cartridges can be collected by calling ext. 4250 to place a work request to pick it up. Once we receive enough for a pick up, the company is called to recycle and/or remanufacture.
