Details

In the span of less than a week, nearly six thousand Central American migrants and refugees have arrived in Tijuana, most seeking asylum in the United States. The political situation is tense and humanitarian conditions are abysmal. Men, women, and children who need food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, and the opportunity to be heard face hostility from the U.S. and Tijuana governments, extreme uncertainty, and a barrage of false information.

How can we best support the human needs and defend the human rights of the individuals and families who make up the caravan? What’s the proper role for a university when facing such a crisis? What are the most effective and ethical ways to give? How can you get involved as an individual, a student organization, a department, or a school?

Please join us at noon, on December 13, in the University Center Forums for a teach-in led by Professors Ev Meade, Victor Carmona, and Greg Prieto, and the Mulvaney Center’s point person in Mexico, María Silva. We will fill you in on the latest information about the caravan and take questions about the broader context. Most important, we will update you on the amazing work that colleagues and organizations across campus have undertaken with our community partners and how you can get involved.

And there are myriad opportunities.  The Mulvaney Center, University Mission and Ministry, the Kroc School, the Trans-Border Institute, and many community partners, are leading efforts to collect and distribute donations, monitor human rights conditions, and actively accompany these vulnerable newcomers to our region. There’s room for the full gamut of interventions and assistance. Join us. This is what it means to be an anchor institution.
