In response to newspaper headlines and images, participants learned about and discussed the Black Lives Matter movement and examined the historical context of police brutality and racial profiling. The workshop explored how artists have responded to injustice and discussed how poetry, performance and movement can be a form of peaceful protest. Hands-on art-making activities and small group work gave participants an opportunity to create and share a collaborative piece.

Kimani Fowlin is an assistant professor of dance at Drew University and taught dance for over 17 years at Mason Gross School for the Arts at Rutgers University. Fowlin has collaborated with acclaimed Broadway dancer Nicole De Weever in St. Maarten for her organization Art Saves Lives, and playwright Nina Angela Mercer for a New York City showcase of Gypsy and the Bully Door and a choreo-poem performance of Itagua Meji. Fowlin has performed in Peru, Russia, Ghana and Greece. She strives to create art with a purpose by focusing on social justice, healing, transformation and peace.

Renée Watson is a writer, performer and educator. She has written books for teens and children, and her work has received several honors including an NAACP Image Award nomination in children’s literature and an American Library Association nomination for Best Fiction for Young Adults. Watson’s passion for using the arts to help youth discuss social issues and cope with trauma led her to teach creative writing and theater in public schools and community centers throughout the nation. She is a consultant to arts education organizations and universities to find methods that effectively incorporate social justice values and pedagogy into curricula.
