San Diego (March 28, 2012) - University of San Diego (USD) School of Law's  Duberstein Bankruptcy Moot Court team was awarded an Honorable Mention for Best Brief at this year's Conrad Duberstein National Bankruptcy Moot Court Competition held at St. John's University School of Law in Queens, N.Y.

Third-year students Max Carpinelli and Lauren Hargrove competed alongside 50 other teams to receive this distinction. Carpinelli and Hargrove also finished in the top 20 for the overall competition. The other USD Duberstein team members participated in the competition were third-year students Ryan Washburn and Jessica Sudweeks.

The team was coached by Mary Jo Wiggins, Vice Dean and Professor of Law; attorneys Jeff Isaacs and Philip Giacinti of Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch, LLP; attorney Edward Silverman of Sandler Lasry Laube Byer & Valdez; and attorney Marty McCauliffe. USD School of Law and Procopio jointly fund the competition in order to defray travel costs and competition fees.

"This is the eighth-straight year USD had fielded a team for this prestigious, nationwide competition. Students who participate in Duberstein consistently describe it as the best experience they have had in law school," said Vice Dean Mary Jo Wiggins. "We're proud of the legacy that these students have created for future students and we're grateful to the attorney coaches, the judges and Procopio for helping to make this possible."

Special thanks to U.S. Bankruptcy Judges John Ryan (Ret'd), John Hargrove (Ret'd), Louise DeCarl Adler, Laura Taylor and Margaret Mann who opened up their courtrooms and presided at oral argument practice sessions before the New York competition.
