Not all Americans have equal access to education, and Ta-Nehisi Coates writes about his experiences with the educational system in Baltimore in Between the World and Me. After studying Coates' book, students participated in a trip to Philadelphia and New Orleans as part of an examination of contemporary issues of educational equity. In this session, students and faculty will describe their experiences and discuss the similarities and differences in educational systems and access in these, and other, locations. Come learn about the struggle for educational equity for African Americans in the U.S. and a strengths-based perspective for examining the diversity within and between communities of African Americans.

- describe the current state of educational equity for African Americans in the U.S.
- compare and contrast experiences of African Americans in Philadelphia and New Orleans
- recognize the influence of travel and experiences in understanding social justice issues
