Join us for cake and socially conscious conversation on gender inclusive language as part of Womxn's Herstory Month: Radical X Revolutionary.

At the Women's Center, we believe that the practice of feminism needs to be intersectional for it to thrive. Feminism without the intersectional lens is not feminism. We wanted to emphasize this for Women's Herstory Month, and we felt one significant way in doing so is by utilizing the spelling of "womxn" instead of "women".

"Womxn" is an inclusive term and spelling that validate individuals whose experiences exist beyond social norms of "womanhood". The spelling also has precedent in Latinx communities, who had been using "womxn" long before it started becoming mainstream. By using womxn for Womxn's Herstory Month, we hope to amplify the identities and experiences of women of color, transgender individuals, and individuals who are non-binary/non-conforming.

Here are a few reasons why Womxn is more inclusive than Women:

  • Having the "x" breaks apart the patriarchal standard of language
  • Women are not a sub-set of man/men
  • Womxn disrupts the concept of the gender binary
