SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — The University of San Diego announced Tuesday that it has renamed one of its institutes, which is focused on K-12 education, after philanthropists Irwin and Joan Jacobs.
The university’s Institute for Entrepreneurship in Education will now be known as the Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education. Irwin, the co-founder of Qualcomm, and his wife made a donation in 2011 to found the institute and have given a total of $10 million for its operations, which include advancing innovation and equity in urban school districts, according to USD.
“Irwin and Joan Jacobs have paved the way for USD to serve more than 500,000 students across five states,” said professor Heather Lattimer, executive director of the Jacobs Institute. “Beyond the direct services we have provided to nearly half a million students through our research and best practices, the Jacobs Institute has significantly contributed to the positive transformation of teaching and learning for millions of students domestically and internationally.”
