Between the Future and the Past: Photographs of Cuba by Virginia Beahan
March 16 – May 11, 2018
Fine Art Galleries, Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice

Virginia Beahan, a professor of photography at Dartmouth College, has been photographing Cuba since 2001. Her photographs—sometimes poetic, sometimes shocking—were celebrated in the 2009 publication Cuba: Singing with Bright Tears.  This exhibition will display an entirely new body of work for the first time, one rooted in her visits to Cuba since tentative steps toward normalization of US/Cuba relations were announced in 2014.  In a shift away from island landscapes to a series of portraits, these new photographs recognize the emergent class of resilient, business-minded individuals and frames those entrepreneurial efforts within still-uncertain economic circumstances. This project is jointly sponsored by the Business School and Kroc School of Peace Studies.

Join us, as we celebrate Prof Beahan's new work and collaboration with USD at our preview and reception on March 15, 2018, from 5-7 p.m. Beahan will lead a gallery tour at approximately 6 p.m. for all interested attendees. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free, no RSVP necessary.
