Americans have freedoms and liberties guaranteed by the US Constitution: freedom from wrongful imprisonment, freedom
of religion, freedom of speech, and the right to petition for redress. All of these are derived from rights granted in Britain between 1679 and 1689. In this lecture, William Gibson explores the origins of these rights and examines the extraordinary and surprising circumstances in which they were granted. These rights were obtained at a time of crisis and reflect political instability as much as the growth of democracy.
