Mother Rosalie Clifton Hill is more than just a name on our building, she’s also the co-founder of what is now the University of San Diego. In 1945, Bishop Charles F. Buddy and Mother Rosalie Clifton Hill, RSCJ stood on a hilltop and envisioned building two institutions that would provide the best in sacred and secular learning.
Groundbreaking occurred in May of 1948 and the College for Women opened its doors in 1949. The College for Women later was joined by the College for Men and the School of Law. In 1972, the three merged to become the University of San Diego. Mother Hill was the founding president of the San Diego College for Women and served as an honorary president until her death on December 12th, 1964. Mother Hill embodied the compassionate service and dedication to educational equity that is foundational to the mission and vision of SOLES.
The building represents the legacy of Mother Hill and the Religious of the Sacred Heart. Without their commitment, perseverance and unquestionable genius, the University of San Diego would not be what it is today.
Join us as we celebrate her birthday and her legacy her at SOLES and at USD.
