Sonia Nieto,
Professor Emerita, Language, Literacy & Culture, University of Massachusetts, Amherst-College of Education
Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies
Dr. Sonia Nieto will have a conversation on what it takes to become a culturally and linguistically competent teacher and to find “joy in teaching” culturally and linguistically diverse students, even if teachers only speak one language. She will explore what it takes for teachers to move beyond surviving to persist and thrive in the profession. What do future teachers need to know about their students and how do they learn these things? How do they find joy in teaching students of diverse backgrounds? And how can teachers become activists and advocates for their students and also remain intellectually engaged in the profession and in the communities they serve. Some of her books include Why We Teach Now (2015), Finding Joy in Teaching Students of Diverse Backgrounds (2013), and Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education.
