You are invited to join the Trans-Border Institute's opening night photography exhibition of Escondido in Escondido, a photo workshop for high school students, at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.

Over the past two years, Chicago-based photographer Jon Lowenstein and USD’s Trans-Border Institute have organized a photo-documentary workshop for high school students. Participants were challenged to explore their community through the use of images, starting with themselves, their families and expanding to the larger community of Escondido. In particular, the students took on the theme of immigration, examining what it means to them and how it has shaped their lives and worldview.

The students produced and collected a multitude of photographs that carry the meaning of what they have seen and their own life experiences. They published a photo essay that delivers an alternative way of understanding the social and cultural environment in Escondido, one that invites reflection on a shared experience rather than stoking fear over a divisive issue.

Teun van der Heijden, one of the premier book designers in the world, based in Amsterdam, came to Escondido to work with the students to create the final publication, transforming single images into a collective photographic essay. The result is an innovative publication and public exhibition that will take place at the municipal gallery of Escondido, designed to highlight the real stories of immigrants and native-born residents alike in the vibrant and diverse City of Escondido. This project seeks to create possibilities for community engagement, building bridges between the different members of the Escondido social fabric and other connections to expand the circle of understanding.

This event is free and open to the public for the opening night on Sept. 24, 2014.
