After developing a taste for beer in college, founder Jack White decided to try making more interesting beer than he could find in the store. He developed a talent for home brewing in his back yard and soon realized it wasn’t easy to get access to the various supplies and ingredients he wanted—nor did he have anyone with whom to trade ideas about brewing. In 1992, Jack opened Home Brew Mart, which he filled with the supplies, ingredients, and conversation every brewer needed to make better beer at home. Soon after, he found a collaborator in Yuseff Cherney, a fellow home brewer with a similar passion and a set of home brewing awards to boot. Together, they decided to open a “back room” brewery out of Home Brew Mart. In 1996, Ballast Point Brewing was born.

Jack and Yuseff’s philosophy has always been doing what they love, and making what they love to drink. So, naturally, they named the beers after something they loved almost as much as brewing—fishing. Today, many of the beers are named for fish or fishing terms, and the labels have fish on them as an homage to the brewery’s origins and as a reminder to always do what you love. By 2004, Ballast Point had outgrown its back room location and moved into the current larger production brewery in Scripps Ranch. In this location, Ballast Point continues to expand capacity to meet the growing demand for its beer. After a decade of growth on the beer side, Jack and Yuseff decided to take on a new challenge—distilling—to see if they could add their own spin on another centuries-old craft. The Ballast Point Spirits family now includes seven spirits, all made and bottled on site in Scripps Ranch.

Today, Home Brew Mart remains in its original location, continuing to aid home brewers and their beer dreams alike, while serving as the “lab” for many of Ballast Point’s new recipes. And in September 2013, Ballast Point added a third location: a brewery, tasting room, and restaurant in San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood. Here, brewers continue to experiment with new recipes, including an expanded barreling and sours program, while the restaurant crafts food inspired by the same adventurous spirit they bring to brewing and distilling. And just a couple months ago, Jack and his team purchased their largest facility to date in the Miramar area, which will be home to a new Brewhouse. The new 100k Square foot facility is set to open in July 2014.

Also in 2013, Ballast Point took on a new rebranding project! From their beer labels, packaging, advertisements and even the Ballast Point logo itself. You can check out their new look on their brand new website:

Ballast Point distributes nationwide and internationally. Their supply chain and distribution expands to Canada, Denmark, the Philippines, Japan and New Zealand. Jack and his team are always seeking to improve on their product, thus requiring them travel globally to find the finest ingredients.

It's an exciting time for Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits and we're thrilled to be hosting Jack during such a pivotal time in Ballast Point's history.
