In the second of a series of three events -- Directions in Latino Representation -- co-sponsored by the Department of Communication Studies, Lambda Pi Eta, and the Center for Inclusion and Diversity in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, special guest speaker Mari Castaneda, associate professor and director of Diversity at UMASS-Amherst, will participate in a question and answer session following a screening of the film "Latinos Beyond Reel."
"In Latinos Beyond Reel, filmakers Miguel Picker and Chyng Sun examine how US news and entertainment portray -- and do not portray -- Latinos. Drawing on the insights of Latino scholars, journalists, community leaders, actors, directors, and producers, they uncover a pattern of gross misrepresentation and gross underrepresentation -- a world in which Latinos tend to appear, if at all, as gangsters and Mexican bandits, harlots and prostitutes, drug dealers and welfare-leeching illegals." - from www.mediaed.org
