Architect Talk: Nerea Calvillo

architect, lecturer, researcher, curator

Tuesday, October 8 @ 5:30 PM
Camino Hall 43

Even if we live in a carbon economy, the urban air is still an invisible and contested issue. This is not to say that there is no research on its quality: science, health, public policy, engineering and other disciplines are analysing its properties, modes of operation and abatement strategies. Yet can we take the air for granted? What is the space configured by the microscopic gases and particles of the urban air? How is it constructed, activated and designed? This research proposes the urge to take the urban air into account from a political, social and architecture perspective, and unfold how it it is built as a matter of concern through the devices that render it visible. By describing some case studies of current air quality inscription devices in Madrid, the aerial-social-political assemblages of the city will emerge, revealing the social interactions, regulations, institutions, technologies, power relations, types of knowledge and ideas of the environment that are enacted through them. The disentanglement of the intertwined and complex relationships between the air, politics and urban management will permit us to question the modes of engagement that these devices are establishing between humans and non-humans, to start imagining alternatives of other possible Aerópolis.

Architect, lecturer, researcher and curator, Nerea Calvillo is interested in new technologies as design tools, environmental monitoring and collaborative production. The work produced at her office, C+ arquitectos, and her collaborative visualisation projects like In the Air have been presented, exhibited and published at international venues, such as TEDxMadrid or the Canadian Centre of Architecture (CCA). She is currently a Poiesis Fellow (NYU), lectures at Alicante University (UA), is Medialab-Prado Madrid´s curator of the Connecting Cities Network European project on Media Facades, is a PhD candidate at ETSAM and a researcher at the Citizen Sense project at Goldsmiths University of London.
