The United States has been home to a rich and diverse Latin American, Latino and Spanish literary community throughout its history. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, writers from all over the Americas and Spain – think José Martí (Cuba), Federico García Lorca (Spain), and Gabriela Mistral (Chile) – either spent extended periods of time in the U.S. or, like Isabel Allende (Chile), José Kozer (Cuba), and Edmundo Paz-Soldán (Bolivia), just to name a few, settled and made this country their home.
