The Cuban socialist regime is one of the last remnants of the Cold War. Under the auspices of its fabled revolutionary hero and leader, Fidel Castro, the island-nation has weathered such difficulties as the 50-year-long U.S. embargo, the loss of Soviet support following the dissolution of the U.S.S.R, and countless natural disasters. In recent years under the leadership of Raúl Castro, Cubans have experienced a wave of reforms which seemingly contradict the spirit of the Cuban Revolution and have led The Economist to speculate that Cuba is now on the road to capitalism. Whether or not the reforms will precipitate regime change remains unclear, but one thing is certain, the wind of change are in the air.
