Bridges Academy: Religion, Politics, and the Makings of a New Middle East
Date and Time

By now, the story of the "Arab Spring" is a familiar one. Beginning in December 2010, young people in Tunisia and then across the region, in different forms and places, marched themselves free from the shackles of authoritarianism, chipping away at decades of repressive rule that was once deemed indestructible. But that, as students of democratic transitions could have predicted, turned out to be the easy part. Middle East expert and political science professor Avi Spiegel, PhD, JD, will take audience members inside the makings of a new Middle East, analyzing the prospects and pitfalls of democratic reform, and assessing questions relating to the role of religion in the new Arab political sphere.
For ages 55 and up.
