Asian Students Association presents to you our first speaker event.
When: Wednesday, November 30
Where: Institute for Peace & Justice, Room A
Time: 7 - 9 p.m. with questions and meet and greet afterwards
Who: Long Bui received his PhD in Ethnic Studies from UCSD and is part of the San Diego Ethnic Studies Consortium, an intercollegiate group that promotes Asian American Studies and Ethnic Studies in the County
What: He will be discussing the "model minority myth" because it affects the popular representation and identity of Asian Americans today. Covering topics ranging from the UCLA Alexandria Wallace YouTube controversy to Barack Obama, this discussion engages a collective dialogue about what makes “Asian America.” Beyond a discourse of multiculturalism that commodifies people’s cultural heritage as well as their struggles, the speaker invites others to interrogate simplistic notions of an “Asian culture” or even Asian American culture in order to wrestle with always ongoing issues of history, racism, poverty, war and social justice.
