Dr. James Tooley is author of multiple articles and books, most recently, The Beautiful Tree. He is co-founder of The Omega Schools, and professor of education policy at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in Great Britain. His efforts at social change and his research are rooted at the intersection of education, development and leadership. For his research on private education for the poor in India, China and Africa, Dr. Tooley was awarded the gold prize in the first International Finance Corporation/Financial Times Private Sector Development Competition in September 2006. From 2007 to 2009, he was founding president of the Education Fund, Orient Global, and lived in Hyderabad, India.
In his current role at the Omega Schools, he is working with a team to create affordable private schools in Ghana. Dean Paula Cordeiro serves on the advisory board of Edify, an organization that provides microloans to the Omega Schools. In that capacity, Dean Cordeiro visited Ghana earlier this year. In January 2012, Dr. Joi Spencer and Dr. Patricia Marquez will lead a team of four SOLES students and four Business School students to Ghana to work with Edify, Dr. Tooley and the Omega Schools team.
