Robots used to be just the stuff of science fiction: sometimes friendly, like R2D2 in Star Wars, sometimes menacing like HAL in 2001, and sometimes both, as we saw in the Terminator series. Well, the future is now. We are beginning to live with robots. In Japan, a robot replica of a local newscaster did the evening news one night—and no one noticed. Robots are playing in pre-school with children in La Jolla, and taking care of the elderly in Japan. We are on the edge of a revolution that will change how we think about machines and about ourselves. Join Professor Larry Hinman for an exploration of this fascinating new world.
