Each TLC Faculty was asked to create a mini-seminar in response to the following prompt:
"What problem are you inspired to examine within your discipline, and how do you go about it?"

Mini-Seminar Title: What is the price of freedom?

Instructor: Dr. Tyler Hower

Mini-Seminar Description: One of the most inspiring and important — even in the real world — questions in contemporary philosophy is also one of the oldest: whether human beings have free will. It’s a question that seems like it has an easy answer. Though we often feel that choice is limited, opportunities aren’t equal, and there are some situations where have no options, almost all of us feel that we are sometimes the authors of our own actions. This is at least part of the reason we can be overwhelmed when there are too many options available to us, whether in places to eat or career paths; we feel responsible for the choice and the outcome. Freedom is closely tied to our self-concepts, our notions of responsibility, our legal and ethical systems; if we aren’t free all of these are called into question. In spite of this, it is notoriously hard to explain how humans could be free. We explore this question and its implications for human life by looking at humans’ place in nature, our other beliefs and what follows from them, and analysis of some interesting results of psychological, neuroscientific and other sciences.

Dr. Tyler Hower teaches PHIL 111: Philosophy of Human Nature.
