Each TLC Faculty was asked to create a mini-seminar in response to the following prompt:
"What problem are you inspired to examine within your discipline, and how do you go about it?"

Mini-Seminar Title: Should Religion Have a Public Role?

Instructor: Dr. Mary Doak

Mini-Seminar Description: Religious freedom is central to U.S. national identity and is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. This right is intended to protect personal freedom while also making it possible for us to unite politically despite our religious differences. Yet ours is a deeply polarized country, and religion is clearly a factor in the culture wars that so bitterly divide us. Is it possible to come together as citizens despite our deep differences over religious beliefs and values? If so, must we keep our religion in our private lives, or could our different religious beliefs and values (including Christianity) be forces for mutual respect and greater unity?

Dr. Mary Doak teaches THRS 114: Introduction to Catholic Theology.
