Each TLC Faculty was asked to create a mini-seminar in response to the following prompt:
"What problem are you inspired to examine within your discipline, and how do you go about it?"

Mini-Seminar Title: What can studying the past teach us about ourselves?

Instructor: Dr. Ryan Abrecht

Mini-Seminar Description: History is fascinating because it shows us that people in the past were, in some ways, very much like us. At the same time, it reveals how different people in the past could be from us, sometimes shockingly so. As a historian, I’m inspired by trying to understand how varied circumstances and ideas shape both individuals and entire societies at different points in time, as well as what variables cause those individuals and societies to change as time moves on. This is a crucial task. Without analyzing the legacy we inherit from the past, we cannot hope to comprehend our present or work together to realize a better future.

Dr. Ryan Abrecht teaches HIST 102: The Ancient World.
