Abstract
In the Peer Instruction pedagogy, or teaching method, lecture is augmented by student problem solving and peer group discussion. In my research work, we tested a common question about the effectiveness of peer discussion -- do students really learn from it, or do they just fall in line with the opinion of the perceived strongest student in the group? I will discuss how we replicated an experiment from a biology class that was published in the journal Science, which directly addresses this question. Then I will briefly survey other documented benefits of active learning in the computer science classroom.
