Lynn Comella, PhD, assistant professor in the Women's Studies Department at UNLV, will deliver a lecture titled, "Sex Positive Interventions: Feminist Pornography as Cultural Critique." Her lecture will serve as a keynote for the Lambda Pi Eta Spring Initiation, which begins at 6 p.m.
Pornography remains a divisive issue among feminists. Anti-pornography feminists argue that pornography perpetuates inequality. Sex positive feminists, on the other hand, suggest that pornography, as a system of representation, can be reworked in ways that challenge dominant understandings of gender, sex and power. This talk discusses the history of sex positive interventions – including the rise of feminist sex toy stores and pornography – as forms of cultural critique that have enlarged and reshaped understandings about female sexuality, desire, pornography and commerce.
Dr. Comella's lecture is part of an ongoing discussion about the politics of sexual representation sparked by senior JaRae Birkeland's independent study last semester. Dr. Comella, whose graduate training includes an MA from The New School in Gender Studies and a PhD in Communication at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will enter these discussions through the lens of representation.
