Lecture and Dialogue with Narayanbhai Mahadevbhai Desai, chancellor, Gujarat Vidyapith, India
Arguably the most well regarded torch bearer of the Gandhian thoughts, Narayanbhai is a prolific writer, educator, and social activist. He is the chancellor of the Gujarat Vidyapeeth, whose first chancellor was Gandhi himself. He is also serving as the president of Gujarati Literary Academy.
Narayanbhai Desai moved to Gandhi's ashram as a month old baby in 1924. He spent the next 23 years of his life in the ashram, being educated and trained directly by Gandhi and his close associates. After Indian independence, Narayanbhai joined the Peace Brigade "Shanti Sena" (founded by Vinoba Bhave and headed by Jayaprakash Narayan). The Shanti Sena trained peace volunteers who intervened and helped restore harmony during ethnic conflicts.
Narayanbhai is the author of more than 50 books in Gujarati, Hindi and English as well as more than a thousand articles published in various magazines and journals. Among the numerous honors awarded to him include India's most prestigious Sahitya Academy and Murtidevi Gyanpith awards for literature, Jamnalal Bajaj Award for activities inspired by Gandhi, and the UNESCO prize for International Peace, shared with a Pakistani Peace Group.
