Details

“Gender and Sexuality in African Refugee Resettlement” by Jesse Mills, Ph.D.

Mills presents from his current research on youth programs for Somalis in San Diego. Drawing upon readings in the history of sexuality and qualitative ethnographic data, Mills explores the hybridity of ethnic identity and the power struggles at play between, on the one hand, abstinence-only and male responsibility programming, and Somali religious/cultural formations, on the other.

General discussion topics include

  • Ethnic Studies interdisciplinary methodology
  • participatory action research, race and ethnicity formations
  • humanitarianism
  • social construction of masculinity, family, and community
