Marketing Your Event

Getting the word out on your event is crucial.  Once all of the details are set, it is important to begin thinking about how to publicize your event.  In doing so one must adhere to the following campus posting policies:

  1. Adhering anything to walls and doors in any way is strictly prohibited.  Easels and freestanding signs are acceptable- please ask the University Center Information Desk.
  2. Blue tape must be used to hang posters & banners
  3. You can post up to 50 posters on the sidewalks IF you collect the posters when your event/advertising is complete.  Your posters must include sponsor and contact information.
  4. Banners may be hung by Missions Crossroads, Parking Structure, and Maher Hall.  Blue taped must be used to hang the banner.  Take down your banner following the event.
  5. Read below regarding number of posters and locations for UC and Residence Halls.
  6. You must supply your own blue tape.  You can purchase at the Bookstore.

The following options should be considered for marketing your event:

1)  Posters & Sidewalk Posting:

All posters posted in the UC must be approved in the University Center Operations office located behind the Information Desk in UC210. Call  x8888 for details.   You can post up to (3) posters in the UC.

Flyers around campus are subject to each building’s policy.  Post only where other posters are.  Materials necessary for marketing and promoting events can be found in Associated Students Directors & Senators Office located at UC 161

  • Posting in the Residence Halls: Take Posters to the Residential Life , Missions Crossroads
  • Bring Posters at least 4 days prior to the date you want posted
  • Total Number of posters 134

Sidewalk Poster Guidelines

  • All posters need to be dated (have the date of the event on the poster).  Posters saying “tonight’ or ‘every Wednesday” will be pulled up.
  • Do NOT post on light poles, walls, buildings, fountains, or bollards.  Only post on grey, cement sidewalks.
  • Only use blue tape.
  • Posters must include a sponsor (organization or department).
  • Posters may be no larger than 11x17.
  • If the posters are wet (rain, sprinkler, or other), they will be pulled up.
  • Organizations and Departments are required to pull up posters the day following the event.
  • You can post no more than 50 posters on sidewalks
  • Bright colored paper which will bleed through and stain concrete is not permitted.
  • For special requests regarding outside posting, contact Campus Scheduling at x4592.

2)  Marketing Supplies

Banner Making Supplies (Paper and Markers) are available in UC 161.  You will need to have your Campus ID available to use the markers.

Die Cuts (Punch for letters and numbers).  The Die Cut machine can cut out 4" letters andnumbers for signs or bulletin boards.  The Die Cuts are available in UC 161.

2)  Print Shop

Print flyers, foam boards, invitations and/or mail, Print Shop @ x4890 or at www.sandiego.edu/printshop (for information on mailing guidelines contact USD Mail Center x2204)

3)  Off Campus Publicity:

  1. Call Public Relations at x4681 to notify them of the event and discuss the best method for publicizing
  2. Post Event on the USD calendar or at news@sandiego.edu, Public Relations at x4681 (public events only)
  3. Issue a press release, Public Relations at x4681 (public events only)
  4. Advertise in the Alcala View or in USD Magazine, Publications at x4684
  5. Use Facebook or Myspace

4)  On Campus Marketing Media:

  1. Market your event on the portal by http://www.sandiego.edu/mypostings/
  2. Market your event to faculty for classes by emailing jschreiber@sandiego.edu for Liberal Arts Beyond the Classroom
  3. Get an article in The Vista student newspaper by calling x4714 or emailing Vista Publications at vista@sandiego.edu
  4. Have your event published in A.S. Table Stands- contact AS Marketers

5)  Vendor Information Tables:

Refrain from hosting vendor/information tables on campus except in front of the UC and the KIPJ. Any fundraiser that involves an off-campus business or organization must be approved through UC Operations (UC 210).  Fees may apply.  Organizations can reserve tables by calling Campus Scheduling x4592.

6)  Marketing Ideas:

Use balloons
Consider marketing on Aromas Coffee Cups

Use give-a-ways like candy, pens, toys with your event information
Create a foam board
Flyers, posters, 1/4 sheets
Electronic Sign in the Deli
Contacting Professors or classes if the event relate
Die Cuts
AS Table Stands
