CULTURES-FILIPINO

Welcome to Filipino Culture

Magandang gabi or good day. With over 7,000 islands within the Philippine archipelago and over 60 dialects, the Filipinos have diverse roots. Filipinos have evolutionary roots from the Australo-Melanesian people. Along with a mixture of many other cultures the Philippines is a wonderfully diverse culture.

As the following pages will attest, the migration of the Filipinos to the United States can be traced as far back as the 16th century when Filipino sailors sailed with Spanish traders to the North American continent. Filipinos comprise one of the fastest growing Asian cultures in San Diego, and are employed in virtually every labor industry. From the military to education, Filipinos and Filipino-Americans contribute greatly to the San Diego community both culturally and economically.

Within this site you will also learn about the importance that the Filipino community places on education, along with some strategies to help you assist Filipino students in school. Your role as an educator of youth from all backgrounds is critical. So thank you for your role in multicultural education.
