Regulatory Center

EPIC monitors activities of the following agencies that regulate the electricity and natural gas at the state and federal levels and conducts research and analysis on topics affecting the San Diego region and California.  EPIC’s Regulatory Center includes detailed information about regulatory proceedings and basic background information about the following regulatory agencies. 

  • California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) – CPUC regulates various aspects of the electric and natural gas industries, including transmission siting and ratesetting. 
  • California Energy Commission (CEC) – The CEC regulates power generation siting, appliance and building standards, and conducts energy forecasts.
  • Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) – FERC Regulates aspects of the energy industry that have an interstate component, such as transmission of electricity and natural gas. 
  • California Independent System Operator (CA ISO) - The California Independent System Operator is the agency responsible for managing most of California’s transmission grid system.  While not a regulatory agency per se, it plays an important role in shaping the electricity industry in California.
