Climate Education Partners Phase I

Summary
EPIC i participating in the Climate Education Partners-San Diego Region, a project funded by a National Science Foundation grant to develop a climate science education plan for the San Diego region. Climate Education Partners is working with local civic, business, government and education leaders to study local perspectives regarding climate change and its impacts on the San Diego region. The goal of the project is to develop a strategic and implementation plan for increasing climate science awareness and knowledge in the region. EPIC Director Scott Anders is a co-principal investigator and director of the project.
Deliverable/Product
EPIC participated as part of the leadership team that developed a Strategic and implementation plan and successful proposal to fund the plan over 5 years in the San Diego region. Project milestones included: formation of advisory board of regional leaders, interviews with regional leaders, public opinion surveys, focus groups, strategic plan, and proposal for implementing plan.
Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Plan Technical Support

Summary
EPIC provided analytical and technical support to the City of San Diego to support development of its Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Plan and subsequent CEQA review. EPIC developed a suite of mitigation measures and estimated greenhouse gas emissions for each and cost effectiveness for a selected number of measures.

Estimated greenhouse gas reductions from a suite of mitigation measures and the cost per unit of emissions for each measure, including tables, charts, methodology report.
Energy and Climate Technical Assistance

Summary
EPIC supported the City of Carlsbad on energy and climate related issues, including an overview of the current regulatory environment, availability of incentives and rebates for renewable energy and energy efficiency, renewable energy technology case studies from the San Diego region, climate planning, and a regulatory and legal overview of greenhouse gas issues in California.

EPIC developed and presented 5 energy workshops to City of Carlsbad energy, planning, and environmental staff.
Greenhouse Gas Decision Making Tool
Summary
The goals of the project were to develop an interactive decision making tool to identify scenarios of policy measures that could meet near-term (2020) and medium-term (2035) greenhouse gas emissions targets and estimate the implementation costs associated with the many of the strategies in the model.
