Professor, Oxford Program Director

Restoration and 18th-Century Literatures, Gender Studies

Professor Cynthia L. Caywood has been a member of the USD faculty since 1984, and she teaches courses in drama, Restoration and Eighteenth century literature, writing and gender studies.   She received her BA from the University of Kansas, her MA from the University of Exeter, and her Ph.D. from Duke University. She co-founded USD’s Gender Studies program and served for several years as its director. Currently she is director of the University's study abroad programs in Oxford and  is co-coordinator of the university's “Summer in London” program. Since 1987, she has taught in the University and Old Globe Theatre's MFA in Dramatic Arts program. Research and publication interests include Aphra Behn, Restoration theatre and August Wilson. She is also the co-editor of Teaching Writing:  Pedagogy,,Gender and Equity and is an advisory editor for College Literature.  In 1986, she received a distinguished teaching award from the American Society of Eighteenth Century Studies and in 1998 was the recipient of USD’s Davies Award for Teaching Excellence.  In 2001, she was awarded a University Recognition Professorship.
