Veterans: Start Here
USD is a military friendly school in the heart of San Diego. You will find veterans and military members at every turn, from USD’s president to faculty, staff and fellow students.
If you are considering the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering, here's what you should do next:
Schedule an Advisement Meeting
Even if you haven't yet applied or been accepted to USD, we encourage you to meet with one of our engineering faculty members to get your questions answered.
Email firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule an advisement meeting.
Contact USD's Veteran Student Services Coordinator
When you are ready to apply, contact Derek Abbey (email@example.com), our Veteran Student Services Coordinator for University Admissions. He provides expert support for our military and veteran students, and will help you navigate the admissions process.
Get Answers to Your Questions
We are often asked the following questions by incoming veterans and members of the military:
Does Military Experience Count as Course Credit?
Veterans do receive course credit for applicable military experience. This is something you should talk about in your advisement meeting.
How Can I Afford to Return to School?
Receiving your education through USD is more affordable than ever. We recognize and appreciate your service, and we are committed to helping you continue your education by honoring the Post-9/11 GI Bill and The Yellow Ribbon Program. Military education benefits like these make it possible to pursue your Engineering degree at USD. Contact Marvin Veneracion, USD's VA Certifying Official for details.
How Do I Use My Veteran's Benefits?
We have an office dedicated to supporting our veteran students, including providing help with your veterans benefits. Check out the website of the USD Office of Veterans Affairs, where you'll receive guidance about using your veterans benefits.
How Can I Meet Other People and Become Involved in Campus Activities?
Joining student organizations on campus is a great way to meet your fellow students. Start by joining the Student Veterans Organization (SVO), which was founded in 2011 by veteran student Travis Weger. You can read about its founding in this archived article from Inside USD.
Where Will I Live?
We offer housing for individuals as well as students with families. More information is available on our Military Resources page.
