Strategic Plan

Inspired by faith, informed by our core mission and values and dedicated to the ongoing legacy of our founders, the University of San Diego's new strategic plan envisions a more distinctive identity among the most respected Catholic universities in the world. To realize this vision, the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering is reimagining the engineering canon by integrating changemaking principles with technical topics and approaching engineering as a socio-technical endeavor.

Envisioning 2024

Developing changemaking engineers

It is an extreme honor to be the dean of the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering and to be entrusted with helping develop the next generation of engineering leaders. Perspective matters to me. It is easy to look through a lens where I see the world as beset with conflict, greed and injustices at the hands of those whom we entrust to lead. At times, I must be reminded of what is good and why I have chosen this vocation. I prefer to look through a lens of optimism, where I see dedicated faculty engaging deeply and personally with students. A lens where what we do as a school makes a difference, where we work diligently to develop Changemaking Engineers who are ethical leaders.

CHELL ROBERTS, PHD
Dean, Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering

To set the standard for an engaged, contemporary Catholic university in 2024, USD has identified six interconnected pathways. Alongside a key component of support from our Revolutionizing Engineering Departments (RED) grant, the Shiley-Marcos school of Engineering is integrating these pathways into our policies, practices and curricula to achieve our mission of providing our students with a holistic education so they are prepared to take on society's challenges and opportunities in socially, ethically and professionally responsible ways.
