Industry Partnership Program
The Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering offers a supportive education that inspires students to innovate, create, and ultimately make a difference in the world by practicing real-world engineering. To support and enhance this academic approach, the school launched an Industry Partnership Program in Fall 2014 with local corporate enterprises. The program gives students practical, hands-on engineering experience that will help launch their careers and offers industry partners fresh, out-of-the-box ideas.
In the fall semester, our corporate sponsors work with a team of four to five senior-level students to define the scope of the project. The teams are given a year-round assignment to create a project from concept through fabrication for the client, including tangible deliverables. The students propose their ideas and then demonstrate their concepts at the end of the fall semester with a 2-D prototype. During the spring semester, in collaboration with their sponsors, the teams refine their conceptual designs and ultimately produce a final fabrication of a 3-D prototype, which is spotlighted in the spring Engineering Showcase.
As the program evolves, our engineering students are increasingly working on interdisciplinary, authentic engineering projects to prepare them for engineering careers. The program teaches them to operate and thrive in a team environment, while building their resumes with real-world experience. Oftentimes, the sponsoring partners hire individuals or entire teams upon successful completion of the project.
As the sponsors of the program, our industry partners gain access to new ideas, innovative solutions and accountability for the promised deliverables. Additionally, they get to observe a team of students for prospective recruiting. Industry partners retain all intellectual property and equipment purchased for the purpose of the project.
Several participating engineering teams filmed and submitted footage of their 2015 senior projects. To view the the sponsor-supported video playlist, visit our Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering YouTube Channel.
The Industry Partnership Program started out with six companies and has increased to nine in its second year of operation. Our goal is to steadily grow the program with intention and purpose to be certain we deliver results for our partners – offering bright minds, exceptional solutions and unique finished projects that make a difference in the world and ultimately contribute to the bottom line.
