Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering: A Superior Class of Engineers
Wednesday, August 27, 2014
There are more than 1,000 engineering schools in the U.S. that are similar to the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering (SMSE). Like most of them, we offer disciplinary degrees in electrical engineering, industrial and systems engineering, and mechanical engineering. We use the same books as many of those schools and offer many courses with similar titles. So why do students choose the University of San Diego? It might be the rankings. SMSE engineering is ranked the 22nd best engineering school among those that focus on undergraduate education. Or it could be our top five ranking in international study abroad, where more than 70 percent of students get an international experience. It could be the beautiful location. USD is ranked as one of the top 10 most beautiful universities. And of course there is the food; again USD is ranked as one of the best. These are all fine reasons, but for those who understand engineering education, these are just bonuses. The real reasons to attend the Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering are:
Small Class Sizes and Personal Relationships
Our size is one of our strengths. We are a small school. We currently have about 500 engineering students. Our class sizes are much smaller than big state universities. This creates a more intimate environment where students get to know each other, creating friendship that last a lifetime. Students also get to know the faculty. It’s like having personal tutors in many of their classes.
The people we hire and what they do. At many big universities a faculty member’s first job is to attract money for research. We hire faculty because they can teach and mentor well. While most of our faculty do research with our undergraduate students, they must care first about student success.
A Unique Degree
All SMSE engineering students graduate with a dual BS/BA degree. As a great liberal arts school, our students get a broad holistic education that is the foundation for life and leadership and they take more engineering courses and labs than 95% of the U.S. schools.
Stewards of Our World
USD has a rich catholic identity. An identity that values diversity of belief and thought as well as compassionate service as demonstrated in our humanitarian engineering club and global engineering projects.
Real Life Experiences
Perhaps the best reason is our vision. We are adding new engineering degrees and pathways, adding new engineering garages and studios, and invigorating our connections with industry and the world. We want to make a real difference.
USD – where future leaders come to meet and study with other future leaders.
